RetroSuburbia @ Pachamama
Pachamama Wholefoods + Kitchen is proud to present an engaging conversation with David Holmgren, co-originator of the permaculture concept, environmental designer, author & futurist. At this event, David will present Aussie Street, and advance permaculture ideas as a creative framework for applying vital retrofits to our homes, gardens and most fundamentally our behaviours.
The ‘Aussie Street’ presentation is a speculative eco-narrative, seen through the microcosm of four adjacent houses and the humans living in them. We watch as they respond to the converging economic, energy and climate crises. It shows the changing face of the suburbs over the last 50 years and the effects of change according to needs/ population/ economy.
Rather than condemning our history and the results of overdevelopment, ‘Aussie Street’ seeks to empower and enliven our prospects for the future.
Details:
The evening will start with David presenting “Aussie Street” followed by a musical interlude. Then David will be joined by a panel consisting of Su Dennett, Kat Lavers, and our very own Christopher Anderson to discuss “Putting Retrosuburbia into practice in your home and in your life” and respond to questions from the audience. Our panelists on the night:
David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator with Bill Mollison of the permaculture concept following the publication of Permaculture One in 1978. Since then he has developed three properties, consulted and supervised in urban and rural projects and presented lectures, workshops and courses at a wide variety of events and venues in Australia and around the world. His writings over those three decades span a diversity of subjects and issues but always illuminating another aspect of permaculture thinking.
Su Dennett is David Holmgren’s partner in life and livelihood. After many years managing the business, Su is now focusing more of her prodigious energy and passion in the kitchen and community than in the office. At Melliodora she provides fantastic meals for the larger crew who live, volunteer and work on the property as well as visitors on tours and courses.
Kat Lavers is a garden farmer, permaculture designer and facilitator. Her award-winning urban permaculture system, ‘The Plummery’, produces almost all the household’s vegies, herbs, fruit and eggs (428kg in 2018) on 1/14th of an acre, while using only 46L mains water per person and 3.9kWh electricity per day. When she’s not teaching permaculture and organic gardening, Kat works with local councils and communities to design urban agriculture projects, and is a volunteer coordinator of Permablitz Melbourne.
Chris Anderson is one of the owner/operators here at Pachamama Wholefoods + Kitchen. A deep love for mother earth (Pachamama) and a passion for hyper-local recycling and zero-waste practices led Chris to take over Pachamama Wholefoods + Kitchen with his partner in crime (and life) Danielle Dimarti the Waste Warrior. Positive change at an individual, family, and community level is very close to Chris’ heart and that is why he is so excited to join the discussion on the ideas behind Retrosuburbia.
