By making a contribution here, you’ll be paying it forward for someone who isn’t in a financial position to pay for their access to the online edition. Any surplus generated will support the dedicated teams at Holmgren Design, Melliodora Publishing and Permaculture Principles to continue spreading permaculture vision and innovation.
Plans and prospects your contributions might go towards include:
- Further developing retrosuburbia.com to include more resources and case studies
- Developing an online course based on the book
- More retrosuburban and permaculture teaching resources
- Researching the outcomes of retrosuburban living
- A legal fund for people living retrosuburban lives, when innovative solutions are threatened by outdated or overly cautious laws
In the event of an outpouring of public generosity beyond our modest and frugal capacities we will donate the surplus to Permafund, the tax deductible aid fund created by Permaculture Australia in 2012.

This is only the second time I have asked for financial support for our permaculture work.
The first was crowdfunding to help print (in Australia not China) our biggest ever publishing project RetroSuburbia: the downshifter’s guide to a resilient future. Thousands have adopted RetroSuburbia as their manual for living a better home-based life, resilient to future shocks from whatever quarter. Recent readers have told me that it feels like the book was written for the current COVID-19 crisis!
Our response to this crisis has been to order another print run (6,000) of the book, while releasing the ‘pay what you feel’ online version to spread the positive messages and solutions as fast and as wide as possible. This is a big leap that could have dramatic effects on our businesses.
Please consider other ways you may be able to support the rollout of retrosuburbia:
- Investing in your own hardcopy (printed here in Australia, and NOT available from Amazon) to help you spend less time on screen, make it easier to show friends and family, and allow you to access it where and when you want
- Getting your local library to buy the hardcopy book
- Purchasing books at wholesale discounts from Melliodora Wholesale to give as gifts to those you love and support
And finally, look after yourselves, your family and household, and your wider community – we trust that retrosuburban solutions and inspirations will help you in this journey.
